This Open Access book presents the results of the SysML Workbench for the SPES Methodology project, which adapts SysML to the SPES development methodology and its underlying modeling techniques. Recognizing the limitations of the widely used modeling language SysML, particularly its lack of formal semantics and methodological guidance. the project builds upon the scientifically grounded SPES methodology to enable rigorous and efficient development of embedded systems.

The book introduces an approach that harmonizes pragmatic industrial needs with formal modeling theory, leveraging a tailored subset of SysML enriched by the FOCUS theory. Integrated into the SPES Modeling Language (SpesML), this approach provides a semantically precise and methodologically consistent modeling environment, effectively overcoming the ambiguity and expressiveness gaps of standard SysML. SpesML, together with its open-source plugin prototype based on a commercial modeling platform, empowers practitioners to apply the SPES methodology within familiar workflows.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the project’s outcomes are directly applicable to key sectors of the German economy, such as automotive, manufacturing, and health. This work thus contributes to the digital transformation and competitiveness of German industry, supporting national initiatives like the new High-Tech Strategy “Innovations for Germany" in the years to come.
