System Architecture Framework (SAF)

The SAF working group has developed the System Architecture Framework (SAF), a framework that supports the model-based development of technical systems based on the SysML modeling language. SAF offers standardized viewpoints with an underlying semantics in order to be able to react flexibly to the needs of systems engineering (SE) throughout the entire project lifecycle.
SAF acts as a neutral toolbox that supports the SE processes of the ISO 15288:2023 standard and best practices of the INCOSE SE Handbook, as well as meeting the requirements of ISO 42010:2022.
SAF is implemented for three commercial SysML authoring tools and defines stereotypes, naming conventions and model structures. This enables exchange, automation, model validation and document creation. It starts where enterprise frameworks leave off and is compatible with the enterprise frameworks UAF, NAF, MoDAF and ADMBw.
SAF's services include standardizing the modeling of system architectures by integrating different perspectives and supporting the creation, analysis and communication of content relevant to systems engineering. It also includes predictable and scalable modeling that limits the modeling effort to the essentials and automation and data exchange that make the entire SE process more efficient.

Current Goals

An important goal is to further develop and complete the System Architecture Framework (SAF) as a framework for system architecture development in the form of documentation and profiles.
The SAF Framework is ideally suited to addressing and integrating aspects of other working groups. For this reason, exchange with other GfSE working groups is a priority.
As a GfSE working group, we actively work on the publication of our results at GfSE and INCOSE events in the form of papers, lectures, tutorials or posters.
